Understanding exactly what a calorie is and how a calorie affects you can be rather daunting.

Officially a calorie is defined in terms of the energy required to heat water but how do you ever relate that back to your weight or weight loss needs?

To make life easier I have translated calories into something that is easier to understand - the energy required for walking.

A 1 minute walk requires approx 3.7 to 4 calories for the average person.
How much is a calorie
For example if you were to indulge in a small serving of salted french fries at Burger King with a calorie count of 344 you would need to walk an additional 95 minutes to burn off those extra calories!!

Calories in Food

Below is a table with some of the bad diet foods and beverages that you would normally be required to limit when trying to lose weight.
Item Portion Size Calorie Count Walking Required to burn the calories off.
White Sugar Level Teaspoon 16 5 minutes
Coke classic (soda) Can - 7.5 oz 90 25 minutes
Big Mac Burger (McDonalds) 7.5 oz 540 150 minutes
Milkshake (Burger King) Med (1 Pint) 600 166 minutes
Donut Glazed 1.7 oz 190 53
Cheesecake slice (Edwards) 2.8 oz 300 83
White Bread slice 0.9 oz 67 18
Red wine (average) Glass 5oz 127 35
A more detailed full calorie counter can be found at Calorie King
The dietary calorie requirement for the average male is approx 2400 per day while the average women requires approx 1800 calories per day.

Any excess calories will be stored as fat in your body and it takes an excess of approx 3500 calories to add one pound of fat to your body.

Likewise to lose 1 pound of fat would require approximately an additional 16hours of walking!
